Pericyclic — electrocyclic rearrangement
Piancatelli rearrangement
How the Piancatelli rearrangement works, in 3 steps. Each step shows the structures and the curved arrows that move the electrons.
In short. A 3-step mechanism. Typical reagents: 2-Furylcarbinol, aqueous acid (or ZnCl₂ / Lewis acid), H₂O. Conditions: Water/acetone, 80–100 °C. Bonds formed: C–C (ring closure); C=O; bonds broken: C–OH (carbinol); furan C–O. Stereochemistry: Conrotatory 4π closure; trans-4,5-disubstituted cyclopentenone. Rate and selectivity: Electrocyclization of the pentadienyl cation is rate-limiting.
At a glance
Step 1: Ionize the furfuryl alcohol
Acid protonates furfuryl alcohol's exocyclic hydroxyl, and loss of water generates a resonance-stabilized furfuryl cation whose furan ring opens to a conjugated oxidopyrylium/pentadienyl cation — related in spirit to the pentadienyl cation of a Nazarov substrate.
Step 2: Water adds, ring opens, 4π closure
This open-chain cation undergoes a 4π-conrotatory electrocyclic ring closure — the same orbital-symmetry-controlled process as the Nazarov cyclization, just starting from a different precursor.
Step 3: Tautomerize to the cyclopentenone
Tautomerization delivers a 4-hydroxycyclopentenone — converting a cheap, biomass-derived furan directly into a densely functionalized five-membered carbocycle in one step.
